OUR HUNTS

Our hunts take place in the remote Takla territory of northern British Columbia, Canada.

In the heart of towering mountain ranges is 2,700 square miles of protected land and rugged terrain that draws Canadian moose, mountain goats and black bears.

The hardened terrain and rough conditions in our territory requires the hunter to have a base level of physical fitness and stamina.

THE CULTURAL EXPERIENCE

The Takla people have hunted these lands for thousands of generations. Traditional practices, culture, ceremony, and storytelling are embedded into each adventure to create a unique and immersive hunting experience.

CEREMONY

Guests will be welcomed through a traditional ceremony with balsam bows that cleanse our mind, body and spirit, and prepare us for the work ahead.

HISTORY

Hides, artwork and artifacts that symbolize the history of the Takla people and our culture will be embedded throughout the camp.

TRADITION

Guide Outfitters share stories about the lands and people, and lead the traditional harvesting of the animals with tobacco and prayer.

HUNT SPECIES

MOUNTAIN GOAT

A strong population of mountain goats are found in the Skeena regions. Mountain goats adapted to living on steep cliffs and are slow methodical climbers who prefer to move during daylight when there is good visibility. The Takla area has a long history of producing fine billies. The mountain goats in our region are genetically larger, and it is not uncommon to find billies 9”-10” class with a body weight of 300 pounds. Most of our mountain goat hunts happen in September when the weather is usually stable and the goats’ coats are enhanced as fall sets in.

CANADIAN MOOSE

Our lands offer a prime habitat for Canadian moose. Our more remote locations have healthy moose populations unaffected by hunting. Mature bull moose average between 45 to 55 inches. Most moose hunt locations provide the opportunity for combination hunts, so consider adding mountain goat or black bear to your hunting experience. The best time for moose hunting is when the rut starts in the middle of September until the third week of October.

WINTER TRAPLINE

Long before the historic fur trade, there was an Indigenous inter-tribal trade network created by alliances, trading partners, marriages, peace treaties and vast rituals. Trapping was the pillar of this network, providing our ancestors with food, shelter, clothing, bedding and even utensils.

Trapping continues to be a pillar in Takla’s culture today as a source of food, clothing and goods during the colder winter months.

The Winter Trapline adventure takes you out on the land to learn our traditional practices for trapping wolf, wolverine, lynx, martens, beaver and other species. Walk in the footsteps of our ancestors, learn our history and hear stories passed down for thousands of generations.
